Minimum requirements of first aid kits & dressing materials

Medical products in Germany are subject to the Medical Devices Act (MPG). Through its DIN regulations, the legislator specifies the minimum requirements of first aid kits and dressing materials for the various areas of use. In road traffic as well as in companies, schools and kindergartens and in professional use, compliance with these standards is monitored by the respective responsible authorities (BG, police, etc.).

DIN regulations: Recognition of the required DIN standard

The following table shows according to which DIN regulations you need which first aid equipment for your company. One large first-aid kit filled according to DIN 13 169 can be replaced by two first-aid kits according to DIN 13 157.

Legal basis

  • The accident insurance institutions issue accident prevention regulations as autonomous law (SGB VII § 15).
  • The employer must ensure that the necessary equipment, material resources and personnel are available for first aid and rescue from danger (BGV A 1 UVV § 24).
  • The employer must ensure, taking into account the operational conditions, that rescue equipment and means of rescue transport are kept available (BGV A 1 UVV § 25).
Comments on this in the BG rules BGR-A 1 § 24 and 25, section 3
  • The success and quality of first aid often depends on the use of the right equipment. It is the responsibility of the contractor to decide on the type, quantity and storage location. The type, quantity and storage location of first aid materials depend on the size of the company, the existing operational hazards, and the size and structure of the company.
Helpful information on this can be found in BG Information 509 First Aid in Operations, Chapters 5.3 to 5.7 as well as Appendix 1 and in ASR A4.3.
  • Even within a company, the requirement profiles for first aid equipment can vary greatly, as do the risks of injury. Each industry has different requirements and risks. The responsibility for the correct selection of first aid material therefore lies with the entrepreneur.
  • As a basis for the company's first aid system, DIN standards are merely an indication of the minimum requirements in terms of equipment quantity and equipment quality, e.g. for first aid kits. Here, DIN 13 157 and DIN 13 169 can be regarded as basic equipment. However, more extensive contents or higher equipment quality - especially for dressing materials - are always recommended.
